Does AMLA have anti-cancer Properties ?

In Indian philosophy, there is reverence for tradition and wisdom being handed down.

The Vedic religion was brought to India by the ancient peoples who entered India about 1500 BC from the region of present-day Iran, according to Historians. It takes its name from the collections of sacred texts known as the Vedas. Vedism is the oldest stratum of religious activity in India for which there exist written materials. This Vedic knowledge constitutes the accepted learning process of India. Even today in India if you say it is written in the Vedas a person will nod their head in acceptance.

The fruit of Phyllanthus emblica (Indian Gooseberry) commonly known as Amla or Amalaki is also known as Dhatri which means, mother, nurse or earth. Ancient Vedic folklore tells us of rejuvenation qualities in a homemade jam of Amla.

We are delighted that research is now being uncovered to support Vedic wisdom. Many formulations with Amla included are available from Ayurvedic texts over 2,000 years old, so we are glad to witness modern science catching up. Since cancer has become a household word, this research is timely.

Dietary Polyphenols and Their Effects on Cell Biochemistry and Pathophysiology 2014

Abstract:  There is a wealth of information emanating from both in vitro and in vivo studies indicating fruit extract of the Phyllanthus emblica tree, commonly referred to as Indian Gooseberries, has potent anticancer properties. The bioactivity in this extract is thought to be principally mediated by polyphenols, especially tannins and flavonoids. It remains unclear how polyphenols from Phyllanthus emblica can incorporate both cancer-preventative and antitumor properties. The antioxidant function of Phyllanthus emblica can account for some of the anticancer activity, but clearly other mechanisms are equally important.

Herein, we provide a brief overview of the evidence supporting anticancer activity of Indian Gooseberry extracts, suggest possible mechanisms for these actions, and provide future directions that might be taken to translate these findings clinically.
